SUSTAINABILITY

Made from 100% recycled materials

Founder image

Every item of XWASTED clothing is made from 100% recycled materials that would have otherwise become landfill or ocean waste. 60% of the total material comes from recycled pre-consumer cotton, with the remaining 40% from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles.

To achieve this, our manufacturer Salvage Fashion takes the off-cuts from organic cotton production, shreds them and turns them back into soft cotton fibres. They then add fibres made from the recycled plastic bottles and spin them into a fine yarn to obtain the perfect cotton and polyester blend. Learn more about this unique and innovative process here.

All of our clothing is certified under the Global Recycle Standard and the Organic Content Standard by the Control Union, licence number CU828402. This is your guarantee that the claims about the recycled and organic status of the raw materials used are true.

Our XWASTED facemasks are manufactured by Tonlé, who share our philosophy of zero waste fashion. Based in Cambodia, the Tonlé team scour the remnant markets of Phnom Penh to collect pre-consumer textile waste from large garment factories, which is thoroughly sterilised then sewn by hand to make our masks. Learn more about Tonlé’s production methods and commitment to zero waste fashion here

Built to last

Founder image

We support the #30WEARS movement – if you don’t think you’ll wear an item at least 30 times, or if you’re unsure it will last that long without falling apart, then you probably shouldn’t buy it. This philosophy of mindful consumption is the antithesis of ‘fast fashion’, where cheap clothing is produced to be worn only a few times before it falls apart or is discarded in favour of the next seasonal trend.

Our garments are made from high-quality fabrics and built to last with superior stitching and finishing. We back this up with Australia’s only 30-wear guarantee – if your XWASTED piece doesn’t last at least 30 wears, we’ll refund your full purchase price and recycle the garment for you.

100% Carbon Neutral shipping

Founder image

Over 10% of global CO2e emissions are from transport and logistics. Our commitment to sustainability lasts all the way up until the garment arrives at your door, with 100% carbon neutral shipping on all orders.

Being carbon neutral means that your net release of CO2e into the atmosphere is zero: whatever CO2e is emitted by the shipping of your order is cancelled out by a process known as 'offsetting' – that is, supporting projects that reduce emissions, like regenerating precious forest, replacing old equipment with more efficient technology, or even training communities in beekeeping!

We ship with Australia Post, using their Carbon Neutral Parcel Delivery service - learn more here.

Minimal & sustainable packaging

Our post satchels are 100% biodegradable and compostable: once you’ve finished with your satchel you can simply take off the label and pop it in with your food scraps and green waste to start breaking down. The satchel will biodegrade within 90 days in a regular home composting process.

Our satchels have passed Australia’s stringent AS5810 certified home compostable requirements, which includes a worm toxicity test, so they’re even worm farm friendly! Learn more here.

Our garment packaging is 100% plastic-free, consisting only of post-consumer recycled paper.

Pureplay E-Commerce

Founder image

On average, e-commerce brands use about 30% less energy than traditional retail businesses. We minimise our footprint with no physical retail spaces and no offices – all XWASTED staff work from co-working spaces or their homes.

The electricity sector is the largest source of greenhouse emissions in Australia, with about 80% of our electricity still coming from coal and gas. We subsidise any additional costs incurred for our staff to choose a home energy provider ranked as five stars by the Green Electricity Guide, an independent resource by The Total Environment Centre and Greenpeace Australia Pacific that provides unbiased information to assist consumers in choosing to create a greener, more sustainable energy system.

PETA-Approved Vegan

Founder image

All XWASTED clothing is Approved Vegan by the PeTA Foundation (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). This is your assurance that no item of clothing in our range contains leather, fur, wool, skin, exotic skins or any other animal-derived fabric.

All companies that use the “PETA-Approved Vegan” logo must sign PETA’s statement of assurance declaring that their product is vegan so that ethical consumers can shop with confidence, safe in the knowledge that they’re not supporting animal exploitation. Learn more at peta.org.au.
